Update on March 20, 2020

In late December 2019, a novel (new) coronavirus (COVID-19) was identified as the cause of an outbreak of pneumonia originating in Wuhan, China. The virus has continued to aggressively spread around the world, and on March 11 the World Health Organization (WHO) designated COVID-19 as a pandemic.  As of March 22, 2020 there were 325,000+ cases worldwide. While most people do not show symptoms of carrying COVID-19, at the moment it is known to be particularly dangerous to the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. However there is still much that is unknown about the virus. The outbreak of COVID-19 is now escalating rapidly across North America and is now present in nearly all geographies in which Black & McDonald (B&M) is actively operating. In light of the pandemic, we established a Black & McDonald COVID-19 Crisis Management Team (CCMT) to organize, oversee and direct our response to this global health emergency. Members include our Co-CEO’s Ian & Bruce, Regional Vice-Presidents, and representatives from Corporate and Regional HSE/HR, Finance and other support groups. The outbreak is clearly on our doorstep and we have undertaken a swift, company-wide response to protect the safety of our people and their families, our customers and other stakeholders, and to prepare for the imminent threat of business disruption. In addition to continuing to actively monitor the outbreak and quickly adopting directives and guidelines of local government health authorities, B&M has been rapidly deploying our internal COVID-19 response plans. Under the direction of the CCMT, local crisis management teams in all B&M Regions have been busy implementing COVID-19 action plans and business continuity directives regularly throughout the week. Actions currently underway and detailed in the FAQs section of this site include:

  • Increased personal hygiene and respiratory etiquette practices
  • Isolation and exposure protocols for people suspected of being ill with the virus, including people who have recently traveled to high-risk locations
  • Increased workspace cleaning in offices, site trailers and other work gathering places
  • Reducing the number of employees working together and implementing other social distancing practices

As of the launch of this site, we are implementing more stringent directives for limiting social interaction to reduce the potential for the transmission of the virus within our ranks. These recommendations include:

  • Deploying mandatory work-from-home, work-rotation, team splitting and other methods for sequestering office staff from one another and closing specific high-risk offices
  • Instituting new work processes and protocols to limit, as practical, our field workers’ interaction with each other, with people from their supporting offices, and with the general public
  • Implementing stricter guidelines on social distancing at home and work
  • Visitor screening at all offices and sites
  • Instituting mandatory 14-day home self-isolation if following applies:
    • have had close contact with, cared for, or live in the same household as someone diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days;
    • have had close contact with someone in a public setting diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 14 days
    • have pending COVID-19 test results or are currently diagnosed as having COVID-19; or
    • are currently experiencing a fever with a cough and/or shortness of breath.
  • Suspending all non-critical business travel
  • All company meetings shall be conducted via Lync, Conference Call and/or Video Conference unless absolute necessary. In the case of physical meetings  practice “social distancing”
  • Postponing all non-critical company gatherings and events indefinitely

Additionally, all travel presents an elevated health risk at this time. If you or a person you reside with has returned from travelling anywhere outside of your Province/State on or after March 9, 2020 or you have come in contact with someone who has, please immediately inform your direct supervisor or manager, and a representative of your Health & Safety team. As of now, we are also deploying new processes, policies and management tools specific to pandemic to assist our Regions and offices:

  • Pay & Leave Guideline for Regional Offices to follow in setting local policy
  • COVID Tool Box Talk
  • COVID Fit For Duty Questionnaire for Employees and Visitors (form)
  • Updated Employee Illness Report Log

Corporately, we have implemented a new oversight process and risk assessment framework so the CCMT can readily assess COVID-19 risk in all offices and, in conjunction with Regional leadership, make the best decisions for our people, our business, our customers and our communities. You will see elements of this framework in future internal COVID updates. We have made tremendous progress in our preparation and response to the COVID-19 crisis thanks to the hard work, attention and dedication of many people. Please keep calm and carry on. The CCMT is monitoring the COVID-19 situation daily and, going forward, employees can expect regular updates. Additionally, a specific e-mail address has been created where you can reach out to report any concerns, ask questions or get additional support: [email protected]
