Living With Chronic Pain: What You Should Know

Chronic pain isn’t just “in your head”—it’s a real, often invisible condition that affects nearly 8 million Canadians and millions more across North America. It can impact your physical health, mental wellbeing, work life, and relationships. Here’s what you need to know.

Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than 3 months, well beyond the usual healing time. It can:

  • Continue after an injury has healed
  • Occur without a clear cause
  • Be linked to conditions like arthritis, cancer, or surgery recovery.

The World Health Organization now recognizes chronic pain as a disease in itself—not just a symptom.

Types of Chronic Pain

  • Chronic Primary Pain: Pain with no clear cause (e.g., fibromyalgia, pelvic pain, lower back pain)
  • Chronic Secondary Pain: Pain linked to other conditions (e.g., cancer, arthritis, post-surgical pain)

Pain is personal. It’s shaped by your biology, emotions, social life, and even spirituality. Because it’s invisible, people with chronic pain often feel misunderstood or isolated. This can lead to:

  • Difficulty accessing care
  • Financial stress or job insecurity
  • Mental health challenges like anxiety or depression

There’s no one size fits all solution. A good pain management plan may include:

  • Medications: NSAIDs, acetaminophen, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, or cannabinoids
  • Psychological support: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, or counselling
  • Physical therapies: Physiotherapy, massage, or exercise
  • Lifestyle changes: Sleep, nutrition, and stress management

Talk to your healthcare provider to build a plan that works for you.

Chronic pain is real, complex, and manageable. If you or someone you know is living with it, know that support and treatment options are available.
